LYNDONVILLE: Church provides make-your-own meals.
By Jessica Wasmund
“The way the economy is, people are looking to save money however they can,” Fanale said.
The cost of preparing one’s own holiday dinner can be high — especially when there are full families to feed.
The Ashwood Wesleyan Church, 12540 Platten Road, Lyndonville, is one of the host sites for Angel Food Ministries, an organization dedicated to providing affordable food to people in need.
“An individual can purchase a box of food from us for $30 — good brand name food that would cost them anywhere from $60 to $80 in the stores,” said John Fanale, a member of the Ashwood church and director of the local Angel Food Ministry program. “This month we’ll also have a Christmas box available, complete with a ham and all the trimmings.”
Angel Food Ministries began as a church organization in Georgia in 1994, when Joe and Linda Wingo founded the program as a way to provide food for their neighbors who were struggling financially. According to its Web site, www.angelfoodministries.com , the program is active still today — providing food relief to more than 500,000 families each month.
Locally, the program has been active for about 10 months, according to Fanale, and has so far been highly successful.
“Every month in our church we do 300 to 400 orders just in the Lyndonville area — as well as some from Albion and Medina, and they keep growing,” Fanale explained.
Program services are available for everyone, regardless of their economic circumstances. There are no limits on the quantity of boxes per individual.
For more information or referrals to the nearest host site, call 765-9093. Food orders may be paid for with check, money order, food stamps or cash. Checks can be made payable to Ashwood Wesleyan Church; food stamps must be paid in person.
The church office hours are Thursday and Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and Sundays from 12:30 to 2 p.m. The order deadline for the Christmas box is noon on Dec. 8.
